Melissa officianalisPure English distilled Melissa essential oil is produced by the steam distillation of the Melissa (lemon balm) herb, (leaves and flowering tops). First planted in 2001 and following the success of the first harvest a year later the growing area of this herb has been expanded continually and our co-op of growers now use in excess of 20 acres to produce an oil of excellent quality. This oil has a powerful lemony aroma and is a beautiful yellow colour. Used in low dilutions this oil is said to help with a variety of skin conditions. It is also used widely to relieve tension and anxiety.
HydrolatDuring the
distillation process, the 'water' fraction of the distillate,
containing many of the water soluable fractions of the essential oil
(known as the Hydrolat or Floral Water) is collected. This Hydrolat has
many of the 'virtues' of the essential oil in a water soluable form,
and finds many uses in water-based cosmetic products from skin toners
and conditioners to soaps and shampoos.
